What I Achieved in 2010

Across the blogosphere I was reading about peoples' achievements in 2010 and it made me feel uneasy because I can't really think of very many memorable personal achievements in the past year.   Other people got their PhDs, wrote a book, nurtured a baby to birth, started or grew a business, got a job, moved to a new house, or made some huge change in their life.

Me, my life looks not too different than the way it did when I saw 2010 come in.   I can really only think of a few changes:

  1. I prepared my two youngest to receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation for the first time in December.
  2. I lost 20 pounds and have kept it off for 6 months -- this is the first January my weight has been this low for probably close to 10 years.
  3. I have exercised near-daily and intentionally for 8 months now.
  4. I have given away or tossed over 100 large-trash-bags of stuff that we had in our house.
Sigh. .... when my kids were infants and toddlers, or medically fragile, it didn't bother me that I seemed to be running in place, because running in place seemed like what I needed to be doing.

Now, though -- my youngest is 8 years old, several of my kids are grown and either in college or working, and I feel like I should go back to college or get a job or do SOMETHING that has a learning curve.   The opportunities where I am seem limited, though maybe it is my perspective that is limited.

In some ways, I think, I was getting in shape and lightening up the household load because those issues were getting in the way of doing something more.  But having cleared the path, I am not sure what the "more" is!

Maybe 2011 will tell me --  in the meantime I keep n mind what Milton wrote, that
...they also serve who only stand and wait.

and what St Francis de Sales wrote (somewhere) that ordinary life is a daily training for what God has in mind for you, whatever that is.

Oh yes, and

5.  I learned to operate a snowblower!  There's something!

  1. Willa,

I find your accomplishments quite impressive. When looked at with eternal perspective, #1 seems vastly more important than a book or advanced degree, which will burn in the end,(with no offense to those who have accomplished those feats intended). As to #2-4, these are things that have been on my to-do list for several years now, and I have yet to manage one of them. And #5, as my teens would say, "s-weet!"

I just want you to know that you are a constant source of encouragement and inspiration to me (and, I am sure, others as well), so you can add that as #6.

May God richly bless you in 2011,
    Juanita

  2. Congrats on dropping 20 lbs and keeping it off! That is a definite accomplishment. And your household is 100 bags lighter than it would have been without tossing the bags. Also excellent.

An empty nest will be different - but with an 8yo, you're a ways away from that yet. Still, since you're not running in place, you have more time for thinking about such things. Who knows what God will put in front of you to do?

  3. Hi, I'm new here but really enjoy and can relate to things you write about. Particularly this post.

I too haven't done great and glorious things this year except work on changing my character defects and focusing on my relationship with God. I have learned one thing in my quest for "what is more?" the answer, for me, is to learn how to "be". Why do I always have to do more, be more, have more. What is it to just be. Why does that make me uncomfortable? Is it that society tells us we have to do more, be more and have great and glorious accomplishments? or can we rejoice in our daily task of feeding nutritous meals for our families, being there when a friend gets home from surgery or just gave birth to a new child.

To have the time to "be", I am learning (though it is tough some days to convince me) is the greatest lesson.

    God's peace,
    Dee

  5. Forgive my ignorance, but would you please explain to me the sacrament of reconciliation? I have never heard of this before. Thanks!

  6. Hi Brandy,
I am sorry not to reply earlier. My blogger account wasn't letting me log in for some reason. thank you for asking! Reconciliation is probably better known as sacramental confession.

  7. Juanita is absolutely correct...YOU are my favorite resource...if I had to pick ONE favorite...it would be YOU :)

    Jillian Elizabeth Barr (his sister)

10 pounds.....and I have kept it off for 6 months. and, I earned $100 bucks from my dad......he will give me $100 for every ten)....only 30-35 more to go....ugh

as for the empty nest.....we will just comfort each other as we empty them out together...sometimes in the same places ;)

And now....I will give you a new project for 2011...it will be your magnum opus for the decade perhaps ;)

I promise to keep you busy. In fact.....I can give you your first assignment as soon as you are ready ;)
