Note to self:

When writing, watch out for quotation marks. They have the visual effect of gnat clusters. I just took out about 2 dozen of them in an old post of mine.

They come in pairs, at least ideally, though I've left some hanging by themselves, I'm sure. I don't use them unnecessarily, technically, but there is more to it than that, isn't there?

The same goes for parentheses.

  1. The trouble with quotation marks is that they require a decision over whether to use them double or single. Double look less like a dirty mark on the screen, but more like a gnat cluster. Dilemna!

In my humble, ungrammatical opinion you can never have too many parentheses or too many exclamation marks. (And for some reason both Facebook and blog posts seem to cry out for ellipses ... why, I have no idea!)
