Design Your Own Story Problem

Aidan, looking at Donald Crews' Schoolbus

Jack had 14 buses, and 2 ran away. How many are left?"

(Covers two buses carefully on the page with his hand)

I am glad he understands the rhetorical structure of a story problem even if he is not yet fully comprehending the actual nature of subtraction.   There are a lot of areas where he is like that.     The abstract significance level of language often escapes him, which makes it tricky to say the least to prepare him for First Confession, but he picks up the poetic resonance and literary structure without a problem.
