"without anything to distract us from its elegant beauty"

When Less is More, an interview with the dad of a severely disabled girl, at Conversion Diary:

When asked how he created such stunning works of art, a famous sculptor once said that he instills in his mind a clear image of the form and then removes everything that is not a part of it. In a way, God has shorn from Sunni nearly all of the adornments that would be considered part of a basic human life. She cannot act on her own, communicate, or possibly understand even simple concepts. She is left as a nearly pure example of human life without anything to distract us from its elegant beauty.

I am clipping this out because he said (and extremely well) exactly what I often thought when Aidan was at his sickest, or when I saw some of the most severely disabled little ones at the hospital. This is not a sentimental thing -- it is simply a truth about the dignity of the human being aside from any other "accidental" attribute. It's something like "the power of the powerless"

  1. Oh, I'll have to check out those links a bit later. I share that post, too. The dad really hit the nail on the head about so many things. I'm most impressed with how he came to those insights because of the difficult circumstances, instead, of, say, being intellectually sure of them before the hard times,KWIM? That's a great testimony, I think.
